Playing the
Game of Table Football
|
On a foosball table, player figures are mounted on rotating bars. The
object of foosball is for the players to kick the foosball into the
opponent's goal. Surprisingly, a foosball can travel up to speeds of 75
mph. If you have ever played foosball, you will know that it is often
difficult to see the ball; in fact, it sometimes seems like a blur.
Quick reflexes are needed to play the game, as well as good coordination
and motor skills. But it also takes somewhat of a delicate touch to
steer the ball towards your opponent's goal.
When the ball is in your possession, some of the basic techniques
include passing the ball with one bar, then passing it to another bar
and shooting. You should find a hole in the defense before attempting to
shoot.
A pre-set number of goals is established before a champion can be
determined. For example, it could be three goals, or eleven goals; it's
whatever the two players agree on. A two goal victory is most often
established.
In competition play, each ball that scores a goal is counted, that is
unless the player(s) on the scoring team broke a rule during play. If
the competition is a relatively large event, referees will decide on the
violations and assess penalties.
The size of a foosball table can vary, however, it is normally about
four feet long, and two feet wide. Contained on the table are eight rows
of "foos-men." These "men" are made of either plastic, metal or wood, or
even carbon-fiber, and are mounted on horizontal metal bars. A team is
comprised of one, two or three human players who control four rows of
foos-men.
The set-up of the foosballers is as follows: One side of the table
looking from left to right are: Row 1: Your goalie 1 foosman (at times
3); Row 2: Your defense 2 foosmen; Row 3: Opponent's attack 3 foosmen;
Row 4: Your midfield 5 foosmen; Row 5: Opponent's midfield 5 foosmen;
Row 6: Your attack 3 foosmen; Row 7: Opponent's defense 2 foosmen; Row
8: Opponent's goalie 1 foosman (sometimes 3).
Since foosball is most often played for fun, there are few rules.
Foosball tables are often found in casual restaurants such as pizza
parlors, bars, schools, various clubs, and even in schools and
workplaces. A pre-determined set of "house rules" is often adopted for
play in casual settings. People often determine that there will be no
spinning of the foosmen so that a person's hand will maintain continuous
contact with the handle.
There is a common rule known as "off-the-feed" rule. This rule sets
forth that if the ball is scored before it touches a player or banks the
goal, it is given to the team who had been scored upon.
