An Overview
of Table Hockey
|
The game of table hockey was actually adapted from the game of ice
hockey. As in ice hockey, "players" try to score goals, although the
players in table hockey are on rods under the playing surface. There are
two "players," which constitute representatives of a hockey team. Under
the rules of table hockey, the representative players are allowed to
move up and down the so called "ice" by going through slots and then try
to score a goal by shooting towards the goal. A delegated goaltender can
also be controlled by the player.
There are various types of the table hockey game. The tables which are
used in international competition are created in Sweden. A company by
the name of Stiga is responsible for manufacturing the tables. Although
most table hockey games are found in arcades and other venues of that
type, the game of table hockey is actually considered a real sport.
There is an organization called the International Table Hockey
Federation which hosts a world championship tournament every two years.
The championship game is called the Stiga Play Off game and can be held
in different venues, with the most recent game being held in Riga,
Latvia. At that championship tournament, a representative of Sweden was
the winner.
In the most recent championship tournament, 22 countries were
represented. Those countries included Sweden, Norway, Russia, Finland
and the Czech Republic, which usually dominate the international Stiga
table hockey games.
A large plastic dome covers the playing surface of the championship
table. It is, therefore, referred to as "dome hockey" or "bubble
hockey." |
